The foundation stone for this building was laid on 24th June 1635, the feast day of St John. The church was built with the help of the worshippers from the ‘Porta di Sotto’ (southern part of the town) who wanted to exorcise the tragic consequences of the plague. Today, there is still a side door that overlooks the ‘Sanado’ district, once the seat of Borgomanero’s Health Office.
The bell tower was erected in 1665 and the church was enlarged in 1683.
The oratory houses the statue of the dead Christ, which is carried by the worshippers through the streets of Borgomanero on Good Friday, evoking the moments of Our Lord’s passion.
