Reed beds of Dormelletto

Immerse yourself in a unique and wonderful landscape

The Reserve

The Special Nature Reserve of the Dormelletto Reed Beds covers an area of 157 hectares lying between the towns of Arona and Castelletto Ticino.

Together with the Fondotoce reed bed, it represents the only area of predominantly spontaneous vegetation on the Piedmont shore of Lake Maggiore.

From an ecological point of view, the importance of the ‘reed bed’ ecosystem is due to its function of filtering the lake water, creating the ideal habitat for many species of fish.

The local fauna is extremely varied, with more than a hundred species of birds. Aquatic birds (grebes, swans, coots) come here to nest, and migratory birds, such as swallows, can rest and feed here.

The cycle paths and trails through the reed beds allow visitors to enjoy this natural environment, in contrast to the increasing urbanization of the surrounding areas.

Within the reserve, thoroughbred horses are trained in the renowned agricultural complex of Villa Tesio. There are also some campsites and the Pirolino free beach, with a well-equipped playground for children.
