Location
Isola Superiore, also known as Isola dei Pescatori (Fishermen’s Island) because of the historical working activity of its inhabitants, is located further north than Isola Bella, about … km away from Borgomanero.
With a width of 100 metres and a length of 350 metres, Isola dei Pescatori is the smallest of the Borromean Islands (Isola Madre is the largest).
Highlights
It is home to a small village of fifty inhabitants, mostly fishermen and it is the only Borromean Island to be inhabited all year round.
The visit to San Vittore Church is a must. The church was declared a national monument and still has its original 11th-century apse. It houses a 16th-century fresco of St Agatha, some 17th-century paintings and wooden busts of the apostles Peter and Andrew, the patron saints of fishermen.
The atmosphere is particularly charming in the evening when the entire island is enveloped in harmonious lighting that transforms it into a real living picture, mirrored in the gentle waters of Lake Maggiore.
Guests can stop for dinner and enjoy the fresh fruits of a day’s fishing in one of the many restaurants overlooking the lake.
